A tragic incident unfolded in Utica, New York, resulting in the fatal shooting of a teenager by police, sparking widespread community concern and calls for transparency and accountability. The incident occurred late Friday evening, shortly after 10 p.m. EDT, when Utica police officers stopped two 13-year-old boys who matched the description of suspects wanted for recent robberies in the West Utica area. Officers also noted that one of the teens was walking on the road, violating state traffic laws.
According to a Utica Police Department spokesperson, initial encounters were tense, with officers requesting to search the teenagers for weapons. The situation quickly escalated when Nyah Mway, one of the teens, attempted to flee from the officers. Body camera footage, released to the public in the wake of the incident, captured the intense moments leading up to the shooting.
In the video, officers can be seen pursuing Mway as he runs away. Amidst the chase, Mway allegedly brandished what appeared to be a firearm, prompting an officer to shout a warning of an armed suspect. Officer Bryce Patterson tackled Mway, attempting to subdue him, while Officer Patrick Husnay discharged his service weapon, firing a single fatal shot that struck Mway in the chest.
Despite immediate efforts by the officers to administer first aid and call for emergency medical assistance, Mway succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The weapon found near Mway’s body was later identified as a pellet gun designed to resemble a firearm bearing the brand name “Glock.”
The shooting has sparked outrage and demands for accountability from the local community and Mway’s family. Questions have been raised about the officers’ handling of the situation, with advocates calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the use of lethal force. Utica Police Chief Mark Williams addressed the incident at a press conference, acknowledging the community’s concerns and emphasizing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
Family members and community activists have called for transparency in the investigation, urging authorities to release all relevant details, including the full body camera footage and any findings from the internal review process.
