New York’s Staten Island. On Thursday night, the community came together at Holy Rosary R.C. Church in South Beach to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe, a prominent Mexican emblem. The feast day honors Juan Diego’s first encounter with the Virgin Mary.
Diego is credited with seeing the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, a key figure in Roman Catholic tradition, on December 9, 1531, more than 490 years ago. According to tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared after he became a Christian and requested that a chapel and shrine be constructed on the location of her appearance. Diego told the local bishop about the apparition right away, but the bishop did not accept his account and demanded a sign to confirm the figure’s authenticity.
She reappeared three days after her initial appearance to assist Diego in establishing her presence. Even though it was winter and roses weren’t in season, the Virgin Mary showed Diego where he might gather them. He went back to see the bishop after picking the roses. In front of the bishop, the roses were reported to have fallen to the ground. After seeing this miracle, he gave the order to have a church constructed on Tepeyac Hill in Mexico City, where she first appeared.
Many Roman Catholics now commemorate Our Lady of Guadalupe’s feast day on December 12 of each year.
She wanted to see it because my wife and I are churchgoers. “Everyone who came brought pictures, statues, and trinkets to be blessed,” said freelance photographer Dennis Rees, adding that the statue was blessed by the church’s father.
A mariachi band performed throughout the service, which was held in Spanish, and the evening started with a celebration for the Virgin Mary. The villagers transported the statue of the Virgin Mary to a gymnasium to share a feast after the ritual.
Following the service, the group members proceeded from the church to the gym with their souvenirs, memorabilia, and the statue itself, according to Rees. We all feasted together when we arrived at the gym.
