First full moon of 2025 will rise Monday night: What skywatchers need to know

On Monday night, the first full moon of 2025 will rise and light up the night sky.

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the full wolf moon for January will be at its brightest on Monday at 5:27 p.m.This year, there will be twelve full moons, including three supermoons that will rise in quick succession in the fall.

Around sunset, you will be able to observe the moon rise from the eastern horizon. The moon will be visible as it moves up and across the night sky if there are no buildings or trees in your immediate vicinity.

The wolf moon will be round and bright overhead around midnight. Additionally, it will vanish into the western horizon around daybreak.

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the names given to recurrent full moons by Native Americans and American colonists hundreds of years ago are the origins of each month’s full moon moniker.

According to the Almanac, it is believed that the full moon in January became known as the “wolf moon” because wolves were more likely to be heard howling during this season.

According to the Almanac, it was once thought that wolves howled in the winter because they were hungry, but we now know that is untrue. During the winter, wolves use howling and other vocalizations to identify pack members, strengthen social ties, mark their territory, and plan hunting.

The Assiniboine people of the Northern Great Plains have different names for this full moon, such as the center moon. It alludes to the notion that the cold season begins around this moon.

February 12 is when the next full moon will occur.
