It will now be simpler than ever to reach a winter traveler’s paradise.
The first international airport in the territory is now located in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, and direct flights with an airport in the New York City area are planned.
CNN reports that the airport, which has a runway that is 7,217 feet length, formally opened on November 28.
Beginning in June 2025, United Airlines will collaborate with the new airport to offer nonstop seasonal flights from Newark, New Jersey, which will take slightly more than four hours.
According to CNN, 130,000 tourists travel to the land of ice and snow on average through cruises or flights into one of the island’s smaller airports. With each flight contributing $200,000 to Greenland’s economy, that figure is anticipated to increase as a result of the new airport.
Prior to the new airport’s opening, flying into Greenland required landing in a smaller city, like Narsarsuaq in the south or Kangerlussuaq in the north. Both can handle heavier aircraft since they are old World War II American military installations, CNN reported.Air Greenland will use the new airport as its base and fly an Airbus A330neo aircraft to Copenhagen, Denmark. It can accommodate 800 passengers each hour. Additionally, flights will connect Nuuk with Iceland’s Reykjavik.
Despite being the largest island in the world, Greenland only has only 56 kilometers of paved roadways.
In 2026, two more airports will open to both locals and visitors, offering up new options for the arctic region of the Kingdom of Denmark.
