STATETEN ISLAND. New York — For the Great Gobbler Bike Race, 200 cyclists gathered at the starting line in Freshkills Park, the largest park on Staten Island. In order to make the most circuits, the bike riders have to finish the 13-mile loop around the entire park on Sunday, November 24, 2024. The winner would be the person who completed the most circuits throughout the seven-hour contest.
Mark Murphy, President of the Freshkills Park Alliance, stated, “We are thrilled to be able to host a race at Freshkills Park that brings so many people to truly enjoy everything Freshkills has to offer. Freshkills Park is the Gravel and Mountain Bike Mecca of New York City.”
Food trucks, music, and activities from Staten Island’s streaming radio station Makerspace Radio filled the park during the race. Energy water, energy bars, and other refreshments were provided for the cyclists and visitors by West Shore, a neighbor of Freshkills Park, and Amazon.
Family rides were offered to accompany the families and kids in order to keep them entertained and engaged. The Borough President of Staten Island, Vito Fossella, stopped by to join the riders and visitors in celebrating the day. After the race was over, he acknowledged the victors and gave medals to everyone who had taken part.
“Staten Island is a perfect location for the Great Gobbler and is exactly what it needs for a Gravel Bike race,” Fossella said. Fossella praised Mark Murphy and the entire Freshkills team, and thanked DSNY, NYC Parks Department, and NYC Mountain Bike for their ongoing support of Freshkills Park.
There were four medals given out for the fastest timings in the mountain bike race and the gravel bike race. There was a male and female winner in each group.
Nelson Ordeman won the gravel bike race in 5:45:12, while Denise Esposito won the women’s division in 6:05:32. In the mountain bike event, Mhajoe Felicismo won with a time of 6:24:56, while Lauren Zummo won with a time of 6:27:28.
According to founding partner Tom Lucarelli, the injury law company Lucarelli & Castaldi, LLP was happy to sponsor the 2024 Great Gobbler at Freshkills Park on Staten Island and is looking forward to growing racing and leisure cycling at this unique location.
