The Georgia Supreme Court has decisively acted to remove Douglas County Probate Judge Christina Peterson from office, citing a culmination of serious judicial misconduct allegations and a recent controversial incident outside an Atlanta nightclub.
Peterson, who assumed office in December 2020, faced intense scrutiny after being accused of a myriad of violations, including mishandling court proceedings and misusing her judicial authority.
The court’s decision, issued on Tuesday, underscores Peterson’s “flagrant disregard for the law, court rules, and judicial conduct rules,” based on findings from a comprehensive investigation by the Judicial Qualifications Commission. This investigation uncovered a troubling pattern of behavior that spanned her tenure, leading to formal charges of misconduct.
Among the most alarming findings was Peterson’s alleged abuse of judicial power, such as sentencing a woman to jail time without adequate justification and allowing unauthorized individuals into the county courthouse outside of regular hours.
These actions, combined with reports of contentious interactions within her community and accusations of financial impropriety, contributed to the Supreme Court’s unanimous verdict to remove her from office.
While Peterson’s recent altercation outside the Red Martini Restaurant and Lounge involving a police officer gained significant media attention, the court clarified that its decision was based solely on documented instances of misconduct investigated prior to this incident. Despite claims of innocence and support from some witnesses, the court emphasized that Peterson’s actions did not uphold the standards expected of a judicial officer.

In response to the Supreme Court’s ruling, Peterson’s legal team reiterated their intention to contest the decision, asserting that further investigation and additional facts could potentially exonerate her from these allegations.
However, the decision to remove Peterson from the bench for seven years and prohibit her from holding any future judicial positions in Georgia stands as a definitive action to uphold the integrity of the judiciary in the state.
