Governor Abbott Unveils Leadership Change at Texas Space Commission!

Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Norman Roy Garza, Jr. as the inaugural executive director of the Texas Space Commission, signaling Texas’ ambitious aims in the aerospace and space exploration sectors.

The creation of the Texas Space Commission, initiated last year under Governor Abbott’s leadership, solidifies Texas’ commitment to maintaining its status as a national leader in space innovation and exploration. Norman Roy Garza, Jr., with his extensive background, is poised to steer this initiative toward success.

Garza brings a wealth of experience from his tenure at the Texas A&M University System, where he served as Assistant Vice Chancellor of Government Relations and External Affairs. During his tenure, he played pivotal roles in significant initiatives, such as collaborating with the U.S. Army Futures Command to establish the Bush Combat Development Complex.

His contributions also secured management contracts from the National Nuclear Security Administration for high-profile facilities like Los Alamos National Laboratory and the Pantex Plant.

Moreover, Garza was instrumental in establishing the Texas Semiconductor Institute and the Texas Space Institute, a $200 million facility slated to be constructed adjacent to NASA’s Johnson Space Center. His strategic leadership and legislative acumen were critical in developing and passing HB 3447 during the 88th Regular Session, which laid the foundation for the Texas Space Commission.

The Texas Space Commission is governed by a nine-member board of directors tasked with enhancing Texas’ leadership in civil, commercial, and military aerospace activities. This includes fostering innovation across space exploration and integrating aerospace industries into the state’s economy.

With his track record of successful collaborations and legislative achievements, Garza is well-positioned to drive these objectives forward, ensuring Texas remains at the forefront of aerospace advancements for years to come.
