Indie musician with Staten Island roots releases his debut single about falling in love with his wife

New York’s Staten Island — The exhilaration of falling in love, the longing, and the anticipation of what lies ahead are all aptly captured in a new song.

I was thinking about how I wanted to get to know my wife and be involved in all of her activities when we first started dating. For example, “Oh, would you like to grab coffee?” Matt MacPherson reflected on the inspiration behind his new hit, “I’ll go get coffee with you.”

With his first single, Would You Want To, MacPherson, a former Staten Islander from Dongan Hills who currently resides in Georgia, is introducing the world to his music.

After writing for some time, I’ve finally worked up the guts to record and publish it, he stated.

MacPherson’s gruff, calming voice sings, “I want to know what it’s like to love you,” as the song opens with a serene, repetitive guitar strumming. I’d like to know what trying is like.

The melody then has a groovy twist as the bass and drums gradually come into play.

MacPherson explained the song’s backstory, saying, “I think that’s when you realize there’s something real here and you go from that introspective phase of thinking about everything to a place of comfort, hope, and looking ahead.”

Making the most of his home setup, MacPherson recorded his instruments and vocals in his walk-in closet, garage, and kitchen, in typical indie fashion.

He claimed that for the last three years, he had been learning how to play the guitar on his own. Additionally, I was a member of a Staten Island band.

He meticulously built the track to his liking using BandLab, a digital audio program that lets users record, mix, and collaborate on music projects. Additionally, he used Splice drum samples.

He enlisted a friend from his band days, The Swill Merchants, a rock group founded in Stapleton in 2005, to master and clean up the song.

Founded in Stapleton in 2005, the rock group The Swill Merchants performed at Mother Pugs, Muddy Cup, and other local venues over the years. “The Importance of Meaning Everything,” the band’s final record, was released in 2020, and the members are still good friends despite their hectic schedules. The band performed at Mother Pugs, The Muddy Cup, which closed in 2010, and other local venues over the years.

The band members are still close friends despite their hectic schedules, and in 2020 they released their final album, The Importance of Meaning Everything. MacPherson revealed.

I had a great time playing in a band. He added, “There’s just something that clicks and you’re like, wow, this is unbelievable.” Doing things alone is a little more difficult, but it’s also a little more rewarding because you’re handling everything yourself.

In the end, MacPherson’s desire to release new music as a solo artist—all of the songs he’s been recording on his phone—is motivated by his want to make his children proud.

I don’t want to tell them that your dad was a musician, but I only wrote tunes on my phone. I wanted it to be something that my children might look at on Spotify in thirty years and say, “Oh yeah, my dad put this music out.”

Sweet Little Bird, MacPherson’s upcoming single, will be released in January and is about his two kids, one of whom will turn five in January and the other who is a year and a half old.

Would You Want To, MacPherson’s debut single, is available on a number of streaming services. Listen to it on YouTube, Apple Music, and Spotify.

“I want people who listen to my new single to feel hopeful, joyful, and full of potential because everyone deserves that,” he stated. Or simply recall the time you and your spouse were first getting to know one another during that period of discovery and had a strong connection.
