Investigation underway for shocking death of this former star MLB pitcher

Brian Matusz, a former pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles, was discovered dead in Phoenix on Monday, and the Phoenix Police Department verified his shocking death.

The southpaw was just 37 years old when he pitched for the Birds from 2009 to 2016.

His death was first revealed by the Orioles.

According to Phoenix Police Sgt. Phil Krynsky, who spoke to NBC News, we responded to a dead body complaint at a residence close to 44th Street and Campbell Avenue on Monday at approximately 2:45 p.m. MT. Indeed, Brian Matusz, 37, was the deceased individual discovered. This incident is currently being investigated as a death.

According to the Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner, the reason of his death is still unknown.

Following Matusz’s passing, a number of individuals and groups have responded, including former manager Buck Showalter.

According to Showalter in the Baltimore Sun, Brian was gregarious, smiled often, and exuded a great deal of quiet confidence. I’m not sure. Right now, I’m sort of compiling my opinions on it. It’s difficult. As we age, we all become more aware of our mortality. It’s simply too young, though.

I’ve always been in control of reality when things like this happen, but this one makes you kind of say, “Wow.”

The Grand Junction, Colorado, native was a standout student at the University of San Diego before he began pitching for the Orioles.

According to USD Associate Vice President and Executive Director of Athletics Kimya Massey, “We are all devastated to learn of Brian’s passing tonight.” His family and all of his teammates from his time at USD and beyond have our deepest sympathies. We shall always miss his heart, enthusiasm, and sincere love for the game and his teammates. We ask that everyone pray for his family during this difficult time.

During his eight seasons with the Orioles, the highly regarded Matusz finished with a 27-41 record, 4.92 ERA, and 492 strikeouts. After winning a World Series ring with the Cubs in 2016, he was never again a major league pitcher. Matusz made 279 of his 280 MLB appearances with Baltimore after being selected fourth overall in 2008.
