New York’s Staten Island — It’s better than driving in New Jersey, isn’t it?
The online financial advising website WalletHub just published its annual list of the greatest & Worst States to Drive In, where the top state is the greatest and the bottom state is the worst.
The study created a thorough rating of current driving conditions by examining 31 important factors of a pleasant commute in each of the 50 states.
Road quality, rush-hour traffic, average gas prices, auto maintenance costs, commute duration, road safety, accessibility to gas stations, maintenance facilities, and car washes were among these important, weighted metrics.
Surprisingly, this year the Empire State was squarely in the middle of the pack. Outperforming nearby states like Connecticut (22), New Jersey (28), and Pennsylvania (36), New York came in at number 21 overall.
With rankings of 40th and 47th in the Cost of Ownership & Maintenance and Traffic & Infrastructure categories, respectively, New York ranked among the worst in each of the individual categories.
However, the state’s performance in the categories of Safety and Access to Vehicles & Maintenance gave it a boost.
New York was ranked fourth for Access to Vehicles & Maintenance, which considers the number of dealerships, gas stations, parking lots, and car washes in each state, and sixth for vehicle and road safety.
The top five states for driving are Kansas (1), Idaho (2), Indiana (3), Iowa (4), and Oklahoma (5), the report finds.
Hawaii (50), Washington (49), Montana (48), New Hampshire (47), and Colorado (46), are the five worst states.
If you’re not in the appropriate place, owning a car might be very expensive. In addition to high petrol, maintenance, and insurance costs, some states can further impoverish you by causing heavy traffic, which wastes fuel and reduces productivity. According to Chip Lupo, a WalletHub analyst, the best states to drive in are those that are comparatively rural, have lower populations, low cost of living, well-maintained roads, and safe drivers.
