Jets coach/GM search: N.J. native interviews on busy day as candidate list continues to grow

It may be simpler to identify who hasn’t interviewed for the head coach and general manager roles the Jets have open because they are interviewing so many candidates.

They interviewed five candidates for their open general manager post and one head coach, who is from New Jersey, on Saturday, which was their busiest day to date: Darren Rizzi, a Westwood native and former Bergen Catholic high school football player, was the Saints’ interim coach.

A veteran special teams coordinator with the Dolphins and then the Saints, Rizzi is an intriguing prospect who undoubtedly aided his chances of winning an open head coaching position when he was promoted to the interim position following coach Dennis Allen’s dismissal in November.

Before starting quarterback Derek Carr was forced out of the season’s final four games, all of which were Saints defeats, he guided New Orleans to a 3-1 record.

The Jets interviewed Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy virtually earlier this week, and they have asked to speak with Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, who will be available to interview virtually with the team starting Monday following the Texans’ Wild Card victory over the Chargers on Saturday. Rizzi is one of three Jersey men in the running for the coaching position. Rizzi was the team’s ninth known interviewee for the head coaching position.

The Vikings senior VP of player personnel Ryan Grigson, Lions executive Chris Spielman, Broncos assistant general manager Darren Mougey, Bengals senior personnel executive Trey Brown, and Commanders assistant general manager Lance Newmark completed five interviews on Saturday, matching the number of interviews the Jets conducted during their 2019 search that led them to hire Joe Douglas.

As of right now, the Jets have interviewed seven known applicants for the open coaching position and thirteen known candidates for their open general manager position. Prior to the team announcing the finished interviews on Saturday, they were unaware of their interest in Mougey and Newmark.
