Jets to interview Mike Vrabel, but can they really attract a top coaching candidate?

The Jets’ hunt for a new general manager and coach is hampered by one unpleasant question.

Additionally, according to The Athletic, former Titans coach Mike Vrabel is slated for an interview with the Jets on Friday at their Florham Park facility, making him one of the most sought-after coaching prospects. We might as well get it over with now.

Is it even possible for the Jets to land one of the most sought-after candidates for either position, considering everything that has happened to lead them to this point, adrift to the end of one of the most dismal seasons in NFL history?

The answer to that query can be found by just looking at the most recent coach and general manager they employed.

Before we get into all of that, though, let’s admit that there are more desirable coaching positions available than the Jets one, both now and possibly by this time next week.

The past few months have been difficult for Jets owner Woody Johnson, who has come under fire from the team’s supporters and national derision for his alleged interference with the organization and dubious decision-making. The Jets will interview a candidate like Vrabel just as frequently as they will interview him. This team appears to be in dire need of the tough former Patriots linebacker. And he needs to hear the proper things from the Jets owner about their working relationship before he will take the position seriously.

In 2019, former Jets general manager Joe Douglas had reservations about joining the team, and the team had to agree to a six-year contract before the recruitment could be completed. The Jets had better be prepared to do that if it’s what it takes to acquire Vrabel.

Additionally, they ought to be more inclined to accomplish more. The second applicant for head coaching to be interviewed is Vrabel. Although it’s not common for coaching interviews to take place prior to a team hiring its general manager, Vrabel is one of those candidates who the Jets would be smart to let choose his own general manager if it gets him inside the building. On Thursday, the Jets also interviewed former Commanders and Panthers coach Ron Rivera.

The Jets’ current strategy hasn’t been effective. Their 14-year postseason skid serves as evidence. It’s time for Johnson to take a step back and do whatever it takes to get the appropriate people in here.

There is a possibility that it will not be sufficient. No matter who the Jets hire, they won’t have the luxury of easing into a rebuild in 2025 without taking a lot of fire; there are other positions out there that will be more enticing and less stressful. For far too long, this fan base has put up with too much awful football and heartbreaking disappointment to handle any more of the same.

Caleb Williams, a potential future quarterback selected with the first overall choice, gives the Bears greater roster flexibility. Even while the Jets are prepared to offer Vrabel whatever he desires, his history with the Patriots and their young, talented quarterback, Drake Maye, may make the opportunity too good to pass up if it becomes available.

But here’s the thing: someone will eventually lead the Jets out of this issue, which is why they were able to get two of the most sought-after applicants during their respective recruiting rounds the last time around: Douglas and Robert Saleh. And for that, whoever it is will always be cherished and remembered.

The most successful instructors think they may be unique among their predecessors. Therefore, the Jets will always have the opportunity to sign one of the top applicants. All they need is a little luck and the willingness to go to any lengths to get them.
