STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.—Selection of stores, including ShopRite, The Fresh Grocer, Price Rite Marketplace, Dearborn Market, Fairway Market, and Gourmet Garage, will host hiring fairs for job seekers, according to Wakefern Food Corporation, the largest retailer-owned cooperative in the United States.
On Saturday, January 18, the inaugural employment fair will take place. At certain locations, walk-up hiring fairs will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Consult a hiring agent or go to the store’s website for additional details.
The majority of job titles, such as full-time and part-time management and general, front-end, and perishable stocking clerk positions, will be available depending on the location.
Nine states—New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island—will host the job fairs.
The beginning of Wakefern
Food rationing ended with World War II, and price controls were reinstated, which resulted in higher prices for items. A salesperson for Del Monte Foods saw that retailers were having trouble purchasing groceries in 1946 and sought to alleviate this load.
In order to make purchasing more inexpensive, he established cooperative buying, which allows a number of independent grocers in New Jersey to buy goods in bulk at a discounted price.
More than 50 member businesses that individually own and run 365 retail supermarkets make up the cooperative today.
Flexible hours
According to a corporate announcement, open positions will offer flexible schedules and a wide range of cross-training to make sure every new hire is aware of the abilities and resources needed to collaborate across the store.
Additionally, Wakefern Food Corp. will hold hunger-fighting events under the Shoprite Partners in Caring initiative.
