Man accused of firing shots at individual on Staten Island, charged with attempted murder

New York’s Staten Island. Authorities claim that a 38-year-old guy discharged a gun from a car early on a summer morning in New Brighton, missing his intended target.

Following his arrest on November 8, more than three months after the August 1 incident in the 500 block of Jersey Street, Kareem Matthis of Broadway in West Brighton is charged with attempted murder and other offenses.

Around 1:55 a.m. on that Thursday, officers arrived at the scene of a ShotSpotter activation and discovered that several bullets had been fired.

According to a source with knowledge of the inquiry at the time, a driver of a red car was captured on local security footage firing a gun at a man before running away.

Police received no reports of injuries.

According to the criminal complaint, Matthis repeatedly fired a loaded pistol in the direction of a possible victim with the intent to kill someone else.

According to the lawsuit, surveillance footage and ballistic evidence found at the scene were reviewed as part of the inquiry.

Additional allegations against Matthis include reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a firearm, attempted assault, and criminal possession of a weapon.

The defendant is released on $300,000/$100,000 cash bond after entering a not guilty plea to all counts. According to public records, he is scheduled to return to St. George’s Criminal Court on January 14.

Attorney Yan Katsnelson supported his client Matthis’s innocence.

Katsnelson stated, “We think this is a case of mistaken identity.” Mr. Matthis vehemently disputes that he was involved in this absurd deed.

According to Katnelson, Matthis was not indicted by a grand jury.
