New York’s Staten Island. According to authorities, a Staten Island man has been taken into custody in relation to a December collision on the grounds of Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze that claimed the life of Kathleen Murphy, 64, of Westerleigh, who worked as an environmental service employee for the hospital.
The NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Information said Thursday that Surija Bajro, 67, of the 400 block of Clifton Avenue in Rosebank, is being charged with failing to yield and failing to exercise due care.
At approximately 6:45 a.m. on Wednesday, December 11, Bajro struck Murphy, who was walking northbound from the hospital parking lot toward 242 Mason St., while driving a Volkswagen SUV southwest on the parking lot access road, according to the NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad’s investigation.
According to insiders, Murphy was only two weeks away from turning 65 and retiring from her 25-year career.
At the time of the tragedy, a Staten Island University Hospital spokeswoman expressed her sincere sadness over the tragic event that took place there today. We are sending the family and our team members our deepest sympathies during this trying time. We are still dedicated to helping those impacted get through this tragedy. We are also completely assisting the police in their current investigation.
Coworkers and patients remembered Murphy for her contagious warmth and compassion.
According to a handwritten message that was part of a tribute at the hospital’s campus, “many of us did not know your name, but we knew who you are because of your kindness and how you would say hello and care about how others are feeling.”
Others shared on social media how Murphy affected their lives while they or a loved one was in the hospital.
One Facebook user recounted, “I met her while my husband was in the hospital.” On the days she worked, she visited him. She talked to him and me for a while and always inquired about our needs. She struck me as a kind and sincere woman.
Murphy’s wife and many siblings survive her, according to an obituary on the Dignity Memorial website.
Bajro’s lawyer’s details were not readily available.
