Mayor picks Staten Island dentist and community leader to serve as interim head of CCRB

New York’s Staten Island. The Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB) has named Dr. Mohammad Khalid, a prominent dentist and community leader on Staten Island, as its acting chairman.

The statement was made a few weeks after Khalid was named to the Staten Island City Council’s CCRBas. He was the CCRB’s commissioner under then-Mayor Michael Bloomberg from 2005 to 2014.

In a press statement, Khalid stated, “I am honored to be appointed interim chair of the Civilian Complaint Review Board.” Public safety, in my opinion, is significantly enhanced by civilian supervision of police enforcement.

Todt Hill resident Khalid informed the Advance/SILive.com that he was asked whether he would be interested in accepting the position by Mayor Eric Adams’ administration and that the mayor’s office formally acknowledged his appointment last week.

“I express my gratitude to the mayor and the City Council speaker, and I look forward to whatever the chair’s responsibilities may be,” Khalid remarked. To the best of my ability, I will uphold the law, ensure that the public is completely protected, and treat the NYPD fairly. I’m eager to do the tasks that must be completed.

Khalid participates in his community through the CCRB as well as the Association of Pakistani Physicians of North America, the Pakistani Civic Association of Staten Island, the Iron Hills Civic Association of Staten Island, which advocates for the interests of the people living in Todt Hill and Dongan Hills, and Community Board 2.

Former Governor George Pataki appointed him to the State of New York’s Minority Health Council, a position he held for six years.

According to the statement, Mayor Eric Adams described Dr. Mohammad Khalid as a longstanding community leader who is committed to public safety. Dr. Khalid is exceptionally qualified to serve as Interim Chair and will contribute a dedication to fairness and transparency to the Board during this crucial period thanks to his decades of local civic engagement, which includes his leadership positions in groups like the Iron Hills Civic Association and the Pakistani Civic Association of Staten Island, as well as his previous experience serving on the CCRB.

“I’m excited to work with my fellow board members as we continue to serve the people of New York and strengthen accountability,” Khalid added. Mayor Eric Adams has my sincere gratitude for entrusting me with this significant duty.

Immigrant from Pakistan

Khalid, a 23-year-old immigrant from Peshawar, Pakistan, arrived in New York City in 1972. Five years later, he relocated to our borough and opened a successful dental practice in Eltingville.

Khalid graduated from Khyber Medical College with a bachelor’s degree in dental surgery, New York University with a doctorate in dental surgery, and the State University of New York with a diploma in orthodontics.

According to reports, Arva Rice, the board’s former interim chair, resigned in August.Adams urged her to resign because of remarks she made on the way the NYPD handled the shooting of a man in the Bronx in 2019.

An independent organization, the CCRB looks into complaints made against NYPD officers and suggests solutions. The board receives complaints ranging from claims of disrespectful language to the use of excessive force.
