STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. James Jimmy Barry was a photographer who distinguished out from the pack thanks to his creative eye and passion for sports.
On July 21, Barry, 31, of Eltingville, passed away one day after his motorcycle accident. Barry passed away from the injuries he received in the incident, but his memory lives on thanks to the Tom Needham Foundation and his mother, Lisa Barry, who have organized a fundraiser for St. Christopher’s Inn in his honor.
The Jimmy Barry Winter Classic for St. Christopher, which was once the annual St. Christopher Roller Hockey Tournament and is now in its 25th year, will bring together friends, family, and a number of hockey teams to celebrate Barry on Saturday, December 7, at noon at the Inman Sports Complex in Edison, New Jersey.
In addition to Jimmy being remembered, the fundraiser is benefiting a lot of families, which is exactly what Jimmy would do, according to his mother, so this means a lot to our family. Jimmy was very giving and affectionate. He enjoyed helping everyone.
According to a foundation release, all event revenues will go to St. Christopher’s Inn, a residential substance use treatment facility and recovery community in Garrison, New York.
According to the release, the residential recovery community serves about 1,000 men a year.
Jimmy had a close relationship with his cousin Tom Needham, who has renamed the annual event in his little cousin’s honor, according to Lisa Barry.
Needham declared, “I love him and I’ll always have his back.” He was there for me no matter what. Regarding my relative, I have a lot to say. He had exceptional athletic ability. In his thirty-one years on this planet, he accomplished a lot.
Eight hockey teams will compete in this year’s competition. Rounds will be 14 minutes long and the tournament will be double elimination.
Additionally, raffle items will be available at the event, including 50/50, customized goalie helmets with scratch-offs, Lotto scratch-off baskets, and more.
“Things like this help us to remember him and honor his impact on this world during his short life,” the mother said, adding that it has been a terrible period for our family over the four and a half months since his death.
Each individual must pay $10 to enter the event, and food will be served inside. The competition is scheduled for December 7 at noon at 2 Villa Drive in Edison, New Jersey. Visit the St. Christopher’s Inn website at https://stchristophersinn-graymoor.org to learn more about the establishment.
