Mets take promising step to land Japanese phenom

Andy Martino of SNY reports that Roki Sasaki, a free agent pitcher, spoke with the Mets on Thursday.

The Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told reporters on Wednesday that they had a meeting arranged with the right-hander, making this the second team to officially announce that they will be meeting with the Japanese ace.

Joel Wolfe, Sasaki’s agent, informed reporters that his client will meet with teams at a central location in the United States prior to spending the holidays back in Japan. He might then go back to the United States to visit the cities of the teams that made it to the finals.

Since Sasaki is only 23, he is subject to the international bonus pool regulations, which mean that each team is limited in how much money it can provide and must provide Sasaki with the finest environment possible for both his personal and baseball lives.

Sasaki’s posting time began on December 9 and he must sign by January 23 but not before January 15. By that time, the bonus pools for all 30 teams will have been reset to about $7 million.

Prior to free agency, the Dodgers were thought to be Sasaki’s most likely destination. The Padres have joined the hunt as well.
