Jeff McNeil, a Mets infielder, is excited to start spring training.
The New York Post’s Mike Puma had an exclusive interview with the seasoned left-handed hitter on Friday. There, he talked about first baseman Pete Alonso’s future and the team’s redesigned roster.
On the newest members of the team:
I am excited to see what the club will be this season, McNeil stated via The Post. “I like what we have done, made some good moves, Juan Soto, obviously so we brought some great players,” McNeil said. Although it doesn’t feel like we are done [adding players], I hope we continue to get better, and I am excited to start training with this group in the spring.

The president of baseball operations for the Mets was busy this summer adding players to the team that advanced to Game 6 of the NL Championship Series last October against the World Series-winning Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Mets acquired Juan Soto from the Yankees in a remarkable 15-year, $765 million contract with the help of owner Steve Cohen. Along with adding pitching depth, he acquired left-hander A.J. Minter from the Atlanta Braves and signed short-term contracts with right-handers Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes.
They have been linked to Toronto Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and still need to address a position at first base (or third). The Mets would formally cut ties with Alonso, who has supported McNeil throughout his professional career, if they were to make a deal for the four-time All-Star.
Although McNeil would really want to see the slugger return, he is aware of the circumstances that would make that impossible.
I wish him all the best, McNeil stated via The Post. “I have been with Pete since he got drafted, so as of right now he’s not there and who knows what is going to happen,” McNeil said. I am very delighted for him and wish him the best since he has earned the right to test the market and maximize his value.
According to Andy Martino of SNY, Alonso is reportedly making progress in negotiations with the Blue Jays as of Thursday.Later that night, Newsday’s Tim Healy confirmed the report.
It’s unclear whether the Mets will have the chance to reject any offer from another team. In any case, it appears that the Alonso Question will soon be resolved.
