MLB: Ex-Staten Island baseball star Brian Esposito receives coaching promotion with San Diego Padres

According to information obtained by the Advance/SILive.com, Brian Esposito, a former standout catcher for McKee/Staten Island Tech, will serve as the bench coach for the San Diego Padres when the 2025 MLB season starts.

Esposito’s promotion was confirmed by the Padres and himself on his LinkedIn profile last Friday.

Esposito will be second-year manager Mike Shildt’s right-hand man after spending the previous two seasons as the National League West club’s catching coach and game strategist. He has a long background in Island sports before playing and teaching at the Major League Baseball level.

To put it briefly, the bench coach assists with strategic decisions and mainly provides situational counsel.

The 45-year-old Esposito was a member of the South Shore Little League squad that participated in the 1991 Little League World Series before being selected as an Advance All-Star backstop at MSIT.

Before being selected by the Boston Red Sox in the fifth round of the 2000 Major League Baseball Draft, Esposito, of course, played collegiately at the University of Connecticut. In 2007, he made his Major League Baseball debut with the St. Louis Cardinals. Three years later, he had his first plate appearance with the Houston Astros. He spent 13 seasons in the minor leagues and played three games in the major leagues.

After playing, Esposito joined the Pittsburgh Pirates organization as a coach. Before joining the parent club two years ago, he managed for seven seasons, most recently with the Padres Single-A affiliate (Fort Wayne).

Esposito managed for seven seasons and has a 433-401 record.
