New York’s Staten Island. In the case of a man from Staten Island who is accused of killing his roommate by stabbing him, his lawyer on Monday raised the potential of self-defense while mentioning a suspected mental illness in order to secure reasonable bail.

Judge John McPadden arraigned the defendant, Daniel Perez, 34, of New Springville, in Criminal Court on counts of criminal possession of a firearm and second-degree murder in relation to the early Sunday morning killing.
