New York’s Staten Island — According to a recent story from THE CITY, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is considering the possibility of utilizing unmanned drones to assist in monitoring its fleet of buses.
According to the site, the MTA is asking suppliers for information about utilizing drones to monitor the whereabouts of the nearly 6,000 buses in its fleet as well as traffic on the routes.
According to a document recently uploaded on the MTA website, [DOB] (MTA’s Department of Buses) wants to solve the difficulties in keeping accurate and current vehicle location tracking for both its buses parked inside depot buildings and outdoors in uncovered parking areas.
In order to create a real-time map of the buses, DOB plans to utilize one or more drones to examine these depot facilities on a regular basis and communicate the results.
When THE CITY learned about the MTA’s attempt, union representatives who would be affected by the new program cautioned that jobs could be lost as a result of the drones.
The Subway-Surface Supervisors Association president, Michael Carrube, told THE CITY, “That’s what we do, that’s our job.” How on earth can a drone accomplish that task?
An MTA official responded to the news outlet’s question with the following statement.
DOB wants to address the difficulties of keeping precise and current vehicle position monitoring for its buses parked both inside depot buildings and outside in open parking areas with regard to the usage of drones for depot inventory management.
