N.Y. drought: When will it rain again in NYC? | Latest weather forecast

New York’s Staten Island. When can residents of New York City anticipate more precipitation now that the worst storm in weeks is behind them?

The next chance for rain might come sooner than you expect, says AccuWeather senior meteorologist Dan Pydynowski.

As a front moves through, there’s a probability of rain from Monday night into Tuesday morning, according to Pydynowski. We might get a little rain, but I don’t think it’s overly heavy—certainly nothing like the storm from earlier.

Pydynowski’s most recent storm, which lasted for over two days, dumped at least 1.5 inches of rain on the New York City region.

In addition to this extra buildup on Monday evening, rain is predicted to affect Black Friday and Thanksgiving.

Maybe not quite as wet as what we just dealt with, but I could see where [Thursday’s storm is] a little wetter than the frontal passage Monday night and Tuesday, Pydynowski continued.

Pydynowski predicted that the Thanksgiving storm would bring between half an inch and an inch of rain as of Saturday morning.

This extra precipitation will increase November’s total rainfall and may provide some respite from the city’s drought. Although the rain from the most recent storm was helpful, Pydynowski explained that New York City still has a significant precipitation deficit.

According to Pydynowski, the average rainfall from September 1 to Saturday, Nov. 23, would be around 11.25 inches. New York City has received less than four inches in that same period this year, even after the most recent storm. According to Pydynowski’s calculations, New York City has received 7 to 7.5 inches less than the normal amount that should be received.

Any rainfall this coming week would be beneficial to the five boroughs, even if the city is on course to possibly set a record for the driest October in its history.
