N.Y. Gov. Hochul announces pay raises for these workers

New York’s Staten Island. Governor Kathy Hochul said earlier this month that pay hikes for thousands of state workers at more than a dozen departments went into effect.

Depending on their job and region, the raises for the roughly 2,600 workers from 18 agencies and the Thruway Authority varied from $7,000 to $13,500. Professional engineers, architects, geologists, land surveyors, and landscape architects are among those who will receive the raises. The governor designated them as the workforce in charge of maintaining the state’s essential infrastructure.

The governor’s office claims that the endeavor is a component of a larger effort to hire and retain staff.

According to Hochul, New Yorkers depend on engineers’ abilities and knowledge to create highways, bridges, massive buildings, and catastrophe prevention. After a thorough analysis of the labor market, it is evident that the state government must do more to draw top talent to the public sector in New York. Engineering and the licensed occupations that support it are among the most competitive jobs in the world. It makes sense to invest in these regional salary disparities for the Empire State’s future.

With 1,620 raises, the Department of Transportation had the most employees. Employees from the Office of General Services, Department of Health, Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, and Department of Environmental Conservation also received raises.

Hochul also said that the New York State Thruway Authority would introduce a pay disparity in 2025 in an effort to attract and retain workers who want to start or advance their careers with the Thruway Authority.
