N.Y. Gov. Hochul, MTA add more bus trips on Staten Island, rest of NYC

New York’s Staten Island — Schedule adjustments will shortly result in more service on some Staten Island bus lines.

In an effort to reduce wait times and improve service reliability, Governor Kathy Hochul and MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber announced on Tuesday that 24 bus lines in New York City would undergo timetable modifications.

Four express buses and two local buses were chosen for Staten Island’s S46/96, S79 SBS, SIM1C, SIM4C, SIM23, and SIM24 upgrades.

“Our investments will provide the better, faster bus service that New Yorkers deserve,” Hochul said in a statement.Millions of passengers will benefit from shorter commutes, more dependable service, and more reasonably priced transit options thanks to the expansion of bus routes throughout the outer boroughs.

It is noteworthy that the S46/96 is included. The MTA terminated a pilot program earlier this year that allowed buses on this line to operate fare-free while it examined the program’s impact.

The Bus Turnaround Coalition has also previously named the S46 one of the worst-performing buses on Staten Island, at one time for multiple consecutive years.

As an alternative to driving into Manhattan, the express bus lines on the Island were previously chosen to have service expanded prior to the implementation of congestion pricing.

The Outer Borough Transportation Account, established and fully funded by the transit authority to give $50 million annually to enhance transportation outside of Manhattan in anticipation of congestion pricing, will provide the financing for this additional service.
