N.Y. Gov Hochul proposes $75M genetics research center for portion of Former Willowbrook State School

New York’s Staten Island — Soon, the location of some of the worst crimes committed on Staten Island might be converted into a facility devoted to paying respect to its former victims.

According to information obtained by The Advance/SILive.com, Governor Kathy Hochul will make a proposal during Tuesday’s 2025 State of the State address to turn the former Willowbrook State School property into a Center for Learning. This will acknowledge the site’s historical significance, which sparked significant changes in the way people with developmental disabilities are housed and cared for nationwide.
