New York’s Staten Island — New legislation that will enable workers in New York to seek workers’ compensation following extreme working stress was signed by Governor Kathy Hochul on Saturday.
Previously, this kind of benefit could only be applied for by specific first responders.

This bill is a component of the governor’s plan to spend $1 billion on healthcare.
In her January 2024 State of the State address earlier this year, Hochul laid forth a strategy for tackling youth mental health in the state.
The conversations with New York teens during last year’s Youth Mental Health Listening Tour, in which Hochul spoke with middle and high school students throughout the state to gauge their experiences with mental health so that the state’s policies and programming can be directly informed by those most impacted by them, served as inspiration for the governor’s seven-point plan.
Hochul also revealed in February that 28 campuses of the State University of New York, which serve over 200,000 students, will get almost $10 million in yearly funding to increase mental health services.
In an effort to protect kids from social media and its negative effects on young people’s mental health, the governor of New York recently proposed a cell phone ban in state classrooms for the upcoming academic year.
