N.Y. Gov. Hochul signs bill to make it easier to cancel gym memberships

STATETEN ISLAND Recently, New York Governor Kathy Hochul approved a measure that will make it simpler to terminate gym subscriptions.

The bill, one of five consumer protection measures intended to save New Yorkers money and improve openness across a range of sectors, was signed by Hochul on Monday, November 25.

Health clubs are now required by law S.932D/A.4667B to accept cancellations within ten business days of being notified. The law also requires speedier reimbursements and permits online cancellations, modernizing contract standards.

According to state senator Roxanne J. Persaud, who represents southeastern Brooklyn, health club memberships need to be a benefit rather than a burden for customers. With the passage of this measure, New Yorkers will no longer be constrained by contracts that no longer meet their needs, allowing them to make the best decisions for their health and wellbeing.

Bronx assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz emphasized the value of safeguarding customers and granting them more freedom in handling their health club dues.

“We give consumers the tools they need to avoid needless financial burdens by extending cancellation methods to include internet options and reducing refund timelines for the health club to pay back customers,” he said.
