N.Y. weather: National Weather Service issues winter weather advisory for NYC

New York’s Staten Island — A winter weather advisory for New York City has been issued by the National Weather Service, and it will be in place from 1 p.m. on Sunday, January 19, until 4 a.m. on Monday, January 20.

With three to five inches of snow predicted, the advisory warns of dangerous conditions that may make travel extremely difficult. If at all possible, residents are encouraged to take public transportation.

According to the National Weather Service advice, exercise caution when driving, walking, or bicycling, and factor in extra time for transit. Verify the access and functional needs of your neighbors, acquaintances, and family, paying particular attention to the elderly and those with disabilities.

In the event that you lose electricity and require immediate help due to a disability, access need, or reliance on life-sustaining equipment, dial 911.

The National Weather Service warned that there is a 10% chance of up to 7 inches of accumulation in several areas of the city, including Staten Island, as of Saturday morning.

Up to an inch of snow might fall on the city per hour during the storm’s height.

There may be less snow in New York City but more inland if the low pressure system moves closer to the coast. However, snowfall totals close to the coast can be higher if the storm moves farther offshore.

Following the winter storm, the city will see freezing temperatures due to another bout of Arctic air. Bryan Ramsey, a National Weather Service meteorologist, says Sunday night will start the run of cold temperatures with a low in the teens; Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday are all expected to stay below freezing.
