New York’s Staten Island — Low temperatures and even lower wind chills brought winter to town.
Although the official start of winter is still a few weeks away, December began with temperatures below freezing, and some predictions indicate that this trend is likely to continue.
Throughout the next week, AccuWeather predicts that daily highs will be in the high 30s and low 40s, while daily lows will be in the high 20s and low 30s.
As early as Friday, the feels-like temperature will drop far into the low 20s due to the wind chill factor.
The majority of the week’s days will be partly cloudy, but Thursday offers a risk of precipitation, including sporadic showers and a small chance of snow in the morning.
Highs will reach the mid-30s starting on Friday, and the weekend is predicted to be windy and cloudy.
Temperatures will return to the 40s the following week, with a high of almost 50 degrees on Wednesday.
Although there is a chance of snow over the week, AccuWeather says nothing will stay. Given that some meteorologists predict a dry spell over the next few weeks, this is to be expected.
Dave Dombek, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather, told Advance/SILive.com that it appears to be quite cold in New York City. However, it also appears to be largely dry, so that’s sort of the odd configuration we’re dealing with here.
“It looks dry, but we’ll have plenty of cold weather next week. If we had a storm, we probably would have snow next week,” Dombek continued.
Significant lake effect snow has forced Governor Kathy Hochul to announce a state of emergency for Allegany, Erie, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Genesee, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Oswego, St. Lawrence, Wyoming, and neighboring counties, thus upstate New York hasn’t been exempt from this snow-free forecast.
It is predicted that there will be up to 6 feet of snow in the North Country and 4 feet in Western New York.

The New York Thruway was closed to all commercial traffic yesterday afternoon from Exit 46 to the Pennsylvania state line in both directions. State road 219 from the Pennsylvania state line to I-90 and I-86 from the Pennsylvania state line to I-390 were also subject to empty and tandem commercial vehicle bans.
The lake effect snow is predicted to last into Monday, adding several feet of snow to areas of New York on top of whatever has already fallen.
Through Monday, a change in wind is also predicted to bring that lake effect snow to the Mohawk Valley Region and Central New York. The Mohawk Valley is expected to receive 3 to 5 inches of snow, while residents of Central New York should anticipate 4 to 8 inches.
