N.Y. weather: When could NYC see its first snow?

New York’s Staten Island. The likelihood of snowfall in New York City is growing daily as fall ends and winter approaches. Even though the city has had trouble receiving significant amounts of snow in recent years, this upcoming holiday might be the first opportunity to see the cold stuff.

Staten Island did not have any discernible snowfall last winter until January 16, over three weeks after winter officially began on December 21, 2023.

This year, snow may fall in the area due to an impending storm that is predicted to affect the five boroughs on Thanksgiving. But according to AccuWeather senior meteorologist Dan Pydynowski, those odds are low.

It is not anticipated that snow will accumulate in any significant amount, even if it does manage to infiltrate New York City over this Christmas season.

Depending on the precise storm track, it is possible that some wet snow will mix with the rain during the storm on Thursday and Friday, according to Pydynowski. There is at least a potential that some snow may mix in, even if it doesn’t seem likely that it would be cold enough in the city.

Any significant snowfall in the region Areas north and west of New York City are anticipated to be occupied on Thursday or Friday, according to Pydynowski. In the meantime, this storm system is expected to bring between half an inch and an inch of rain to the five boroughs.

Beyond this first chance of snow, Pydynowski stated that the New York City area is expected to see a generally cold but dry first week of December.

A winter projection published by AccuWeather back in October predicted that New York City would receive 20 to 25 inches of snow throughout the next season. This projection is less than the city’s normal snowfall, which is approximately 29.8 inches, according to AccuWeather.
