President Joe Biden has proclaimed Thursday, January 9, a National Day of Mourning in remembrance of former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 30 at the age of 100.
Following Biden’s announcement, an executive order was issued on Thursday to observe the Day of Mourning by closing federal offices. Other institutions, such as the Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange, declared they would likewise close on that day. Post offices in the United States will also be closed.
What are the implications for schools of the National Day of Mourning?
No national statement has been made that Thursday is the day that schools should be closed.
The Archdiocese of New York’s Catholic schools and public schools in New York City have not declared any closures for Thursday, January 9. Students should still make plans to visit campus as a result.
On Monday, January 20, schools are closed in honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, so students in public and Catholic schools won’t have to wait long for their next day off. In honor of the Lunar New Year, public schoolchildren will also have an extra day off this month on Wednesday, January 29.
