New Jersey: Trump’s Convictions Could Put His Golf Clubs’ Liquor Licenses at Risk

New Jersey authorities have decided not to automatically renew the liquor licenses for two of Donald Trump’s golf clubs following his recent felony convictions. These golf clubs, located in Colts Neck and Bedminster, are now subject to a hearing scheduled for July 19, where the future of their liquor licenses will be determined.

The convictions in question stem from a New York case where Trump was found guilty of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to hush money payments made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. This legal setback marked the first time a former U.S. president faced a criminal conviction. The gravity of these charges has raised concerns within the New Jersey attorney general’s office about whether Trump’s golf clubs should continue to hold their liquor licenses.

A spokesperson for the New Jersey attorney general’s office explained that the felony convictions “raise concerns” about the clubs’ eligibility to retain their licenses. Although the licenses are officially in Donald Trump Jr.’s name, the state asserts that Trump has a direct interest in them, making the review necessary. New Jersey law stipulates that individuals convicted of crimes involving moral turpitude are prohibited from holding a liquor license.

The licenses for the Colts Neck and Bedminster golf clubs were due to expire on June 30. Instead of a straightforward renewal, the state issued interim permits that will remain valid until the hearing. Typically, such renewals would proceed without the need for a hearing, but the unusual circumstances surrounding Trump’s legal troubles have necessitated this additional scrutiny.

Trump’s campaign has not commented on this development. However, earlier statements from the Trump Organization downplayed the issue, claiming that there was no basis for review since Trump himself does not hold a liquor license and is not an officer or director of the entities that do. This stance appears to conflict with the state’s position on his direct involvement.

Interestingly, a liquor license for a third Trump-owned golf course in Pine Hill was renewed without incident by the local municipality, suggesting that the review process might vary based on jurisdictional interpretations and the specifics of each license holder’s situation.

As Trump prepares for his sentencing in New York on July 11, the upcoming hearing in New Jersey adds another layer to his legal challenges. The former president, who is once again a candidate in the upcoming election against incumbent President Joe Biden, is also facing multiple other legal battles. These include allegations of interference in the 2020 election and mishandling classified information, all of which Trump vehemently denies.

The July 19 hearing will require the liquor license applicants to demonstrate their qualifications to continue holding the licenses. This includes addressing the concerns raised by Trump’s convictions and proving that the clubs meet all legal requirements despite the high-profile legal issues surrounding their owner.
