New Signs Indicate Wegmans Third NYC Store Opening Soon!

Rochester-based Wegmans Food Markets is stirring excitement with the unveiling of new signs indicating plans for a third store in New York City. The banners, prominently displaying Wegmans’ official branding, have recently been installed over the windows of a vacant storefront on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, creating a buzz among residents and Wegmans fans.

The West Side Rag blog was the first to break the news, sharing photos of the new signs on June 25. This development follows a report from the New York Post in February, revealing that Wegmans Chairman Danny Wegman had signed a long-term lease on a 58,874-square-foot space at 1932 Broadway, previously occupied by Bed Bath & Beyond.

At the time, a Wegmans spokesperson described the lease as a “personal investment” by Wegman, with no immediate plans to open a store. However, the newly installed signs suggest a change in plans.

The location at 1932 Broadway is particularly noteworthy for its extensive “vertical transportation” system, which Bed Bath & Beyond left behind. This includes two large elevators and a Vermaport Cart Conveyor, designed to move shopping carts between floors, an infrastructure that could be advantageous for Wegmans’ operations.

Wegmans’ journey in New York City began with the opening of its first store in Brooklyn in October 2019, followed by a second location at Astor Place in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village in October 2023. Despite inquiries, the company has not confirmed its plans for the Upper West Side store.

Instead, a spokesperson mentioned that Wegmans had been interested in the 1932 Broadway location prior to securing the Astor Place lease. However, the timing wasn’t right then, as the company was focused on the Astor Place project.

The potential new store would be located in the lower levels of the Grand Tier, a luxury apartment building with high-end amenities, including a fitness center, indoor pool, landscaped terrace, and 24-hour doorman service. The building’s upscale nature is reflected in the monthly rent for a two-bedroom apartment, listed at $13,200.

Wegmans is no stranger to integrating its stores with upscale housing. In 2022, the chain opened an 81,300-square-foot store anchoring Carlyle Crossing, a 1.7 million-square-foot mixed-use complex with luxury apartments near Old Town Alexandria, Virginia.

Another store, opened the same year, is part of City Ridge, a 1.1 million-square-foot redevelopment of the former Fannie Mae headquarters in Washington, D.C., featuring luxury apartments across four buildings.

The addition of a third Wegmans store in New York City would further expand the company’s urban footprint. Wegmans now operates 110 stores across the East Coast, stretching from New York to North Carolina, and continues to grow its presence in major urban markets.

For New Yorkers and Wegmans enthusiasts, the prospect of a new store in the Upper West Side brings the promise of more convenient access to the beloved supermarket chain’s wide array of products, known for their quality and variety. As the signs suggest a more concrete plan, anticipation builds for the potential grand opening of this new Wegmans location.
