New York City added 86K jobs in past year: These industries saw the most job growth

New York’s Staten Island — Over the past year, New York City has created tens of thousands of jobs, with the majority of these new jobs coming from two industries.

The overall number of non-farm occupations in more York City increased 1.8% between November 2023 and November 2024, from 4,732,000 to 4,818,000, or 86,000 more positions, according to recently released employment data from the New York area from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

As is frequently the case, thousands of jobs were lost in some businesses and sectors while major job creation occurred in others.

With 81,000 new positions, or around 6.6% more, the education and health sectors had by far the biggest rise in total jobs produced.

With 15,100 new positions, or a 3.4% increase, the leisure and hospitality sector saw the second-largest gain in employment.

Over the course of a year, the trade, transportation, and utilities industry added 7,400 new positions, representing a 1.3% growth.

Other industries that witnessed growth were other services, which saw a gain of almost 1,000 jobs, and government occupations, which saw 6,200 new work opportunities.

However, as was already said, the number of jobs in a number of industries fell during the preceding 12 months.

Information-based occupations were the most affected, declining by 9,400, or around 4.4% from November 2023.

With 7,800 jobs lost in the last year, the mining, logging, and construction sectors suffered a 5.5% decline in employment overall.

Additional industries that saw job losses were manufacturing (1,200 jobs), professional and business services (2,100 jobs), and financial activities (3,300 jobs).
