New Yorkers may see state checks worth up to $250 in the coming weeks

A new state law could put some New Yorkers in a little better financial position at the beginning of the year.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli told NBC 4 earlier this month that his office would soon start sending unclaimed funds checks worth up to $250 directly to New Yorkers, as permitted by law.

We will verify the legitimate owner of any unclaimed fund claim involving $250 or less. And we will send you the cheque, he said, rather than merely telling you that we have money.

In the past, those who owed money had to go through a claims procedure, and the state would only inform New Yorkers of the unclaimed payments.

As a result, the state now possesses over $19 billion in unclaimed funds, most of which are owing to deceased individuals.State statistics indicates that Staten Islanders owe approximately $139 million.

Unclaimed funds may also originate from funds linked to gift cards that have been lost or stolen.

New Yorkers can visit the comptroller’s website to learn if they are entitled any unclaimed money. They might enter their name or the name of a departed loved one there.
