NFL Draft 2025: Travis Hunter to Giants instead of Shedeur Sanders, Cam Ward?

The Giants would have received the first choice in the 2025 NFL Draft if they had just lost to the Colts and Eagles to end their dismal 2024 season.

Rather, they finished No. 3 behind the Titans and Browns, two teams that also require a quarterback, after defeating the Colts (and then falling to the Eagles).

Now what?

It’s possible that the Giants will not be able to acquire Cam Ward from Miami or Shedeur Sanders from Colorado. And Jordan Reid of ESPN’s most recent mock draft depicts just that situation. He has Sanders going second to the Browns and Ward getting first to the Titans.

(It would be interesting to see if Drew Allar, the quarterback for Penn State, decides to change his mind and declares for the draft.)

Reid then selects Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter, the current Heisman Trophy winner, by the Giants at No. 3. According to Pro Football Focus, he is also this draft’s top overall prospect. He can’t play quarterback, though.

Here is Reid:

Being in desperate need of a first-round franchise quarterback while the best alternatives are out of the running is one of the worst situations an NFL team can find itself in. There isn’t another quarterback deserving of a top-10 pick at the moment, therefore this is where the Giants would be. However, they do have the opportunity to select Hunter, the two-way star and Heisman Trophy winner, who is the finest player in the class.

Hunter caught 96 passes for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns on offense and intercepted four passes on defense, demonstrating his ability to make impact plays on both sides of the ball. Hunter could assist at cornerback or provide the Giants with another receiving threat across from Malik Nabers, or perhaps both.

Alright, everything is fine. However, how would the Giants handle quarterbacking?

The position in free agency—which, keep in mind, occurs before the draft—will undoubtedly be discussed. In order to be ready for the likelihood that he won’t select a quarterback at No. 3, general manager Joe Schoen, who is mysteriously returning for a must-win Year 4, would need to contract someone who can start (and win) in 2025.

However, there aren’t many excellent possibilities if Russell Wilson stays in Pittsburgh, Sam Darnold stays in Minnesota, and the Saints don’t cut Derek Carr. Fields, Justin? Winston, Jameis? Hurry up.

In the end, the Giants may rue the Colts victory for years to come, just as they ought to lament their futile, Tommy DeVito-led 4-3 finish in 2023 that eliminated them from consideration for Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels.
