NJ Transit driver from Staten Island serving prison time for shooting incident with teen passengers

New York’s Staten Island.Nearly two years have passed since a gun incident on a NJ Transit bus made headlines, and last year the case against the driver, a Staten Islander, who was at the center of it all, was quietly settled.

The 48-year-old Charles Fieros was charged with attempted murder after he allegedly shot three youngsters who were allegedly assaulting him, wounding one of them three times.

According to a spokesperson for the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, Fieros, a resident of Staten Island, entered a guilty plea to one count of possessing a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

A superior court judge condemned Fieros to five years in jail on August 11, 2023. He must spend 42 months before he is eligible for parole.

A Jersey City official told NJ.com that the event happened at approximately 9:45 p.m. on December 17, 2022, in the area of Monticello and Jewett Avenues in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Fieros, the bus’s driver, and a group of teenage men got into a fight aboard the bus before it spilled out onto the street, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. The adolescents allegedly attacked Fieros outside the bus, which led to the shooting.

According to a prior statement from a Jersey City Police Department spokeswoman, Fieros allegedly pulled out a black Glock 19 handgun in response to the attack and shot at the three teenagers, hitting a 15-year-old three times in the abdomen.

Due to their injuries, the teen and Fieros were sent to Jersey City Medical Center; Fieros had facial and head injuries during the initial attack. As previously reported, the adolescent lived and was classified in stable condition.

According to the complaint, officials discovered that Fieros had three large capacity magazines for the firearm after the incident. Authorities identified them as two green, 17-round magazines and one black, 15-round magazine.

According to officials, the firearm was reported stolen in Norfolk, Virginia.

Fieros was charged at the time with several offenses related to this incident, including receiving stolen property, unlawfully possessing a firearm, unlawfully possessing several extended magazines, aggravated assault, and attempted murder.
