The National Weather Service declared a lake effect snow warning for Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties on Sunday at 2:20 p.m., which would last until Tuesday at 7 p.m.
“Heavy lake effect snow,” the weather service reports. In most persistent snows, there will be further snow accumulations of 18 to 30 inches through Tuesday. The western parts of Cattaraugus County and Chautauqua will see the most additional accumulations.
Occasionally, falling and blowing snow will cause visibility to plummet below 1/4 mile. With significant snow cover on the roads and extremely low visibility, travel will be extremely challenging,” the weather agency says. “Relatively narrow bands of heavy snow will fall. When traveling, be ready for quickly shifting visibility and road conditions. Think about postponing your trip. If you have to travel, drive very carefully. Give yourself more time to get to your destination and give yourself plenty of space between you and the car in front of you. Steer clear of abrupt acceleration or braking, and exercise extra caution when turning or going up slopes.
