NY weather: NYC Sanitation Dept. has salt trucks ready with frigid temperature advisory alert

New York’s Staten Island. A winter operations advisory warning has been issued by the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) for Sunday, February 2, beginning at 4 p.m. and ending at midnight.

The present alert is their lower level snow-fighting signal, the city sanitation department said in a release. The next step up is a snow alert.

According to the statement, because of lower-than-expected temperatures, precipitation may begin as a wintry mix in the middle of the afternoon before transitioning into snow. Making sure that a small layer of snow doesn’t convert to ice on a chilly Sunday night before a Monday morning commute is DSNY’s first priority during this weather event.

In order to guarantee that staff are available for de-icing and snow removal even when the possibility of snow appears at the last minute, DSNY maintains differentiated staffing levels throughout the winter, according to an advisory. This type of rain/snow border event is typical in New York City.

In order to prevent ice buildup, sanitation workers will apply salt to parts of the city that are expected to receive the most frozen precipitation late into the night, according to DSNY.

The Department has 700 million pounds of salt on hand, a record-breaking number of employees during the winter, and innovative, high-tech methods of monitoring snow operations, according to the announcement, which also stated that more than 700 salt spreaders are loaded and prepared for use.

Residents of New York City should keep in mind that it is the duty of property owners to clean snow off sidewalks.

The DSNY asked everyone to do their part by avoiding traffic or, if driving is required, to drive cautiously, slowly, and safely.

The DSNY collection and bin rules remain unchanged.

Snow clearing information

Pushing snow into bike lanes or the street is prohibited because it obstructs snow clearing efforts. It is best to move snow to a structure, curb, or private area. Sidewalks need to have a minimum of four feet of unobstructed space.

If there is no more snowfall between:

  • 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., property owners must clear sidewalks within 4 hours

  • 5 p.m. and 9 p.m., property owners must clear sidewalks within 14 hours

  • 9 p.m. and 7 a.m., property owners must clear sidewalks by 11 a.m.

If sidewalks are not cleared, there is a $100 first-time fine, a $150 second-time punishment, and a $250 third-time fine.

Alternate Side Parking

There are regulations governing alternate-side parking.
