NY weather update: Lake effect snow warning issued for Erie and Genesee counties until early Wednesday morning

At 10:10 p.m. on Monday, the National Weather Service issued an updated lake effect snow warning for Erie and Genesee counties, which would remain in force until Wednesday at 4 a.m.

“Heavy lake effect snow expected,” the weather service said. In the most persistent lake snows, the total snow accumulation ranges from 10 to 20 inches, with the largest accumulations coming from South Buffalo over the Buffalo Southtowns into southwestern Genesee County. There may occasionally be a thunderclap to accompany the snow.

“With extremely poor visibility and heavy snow cover on the highways, travel will be extremely difficult to impossible. The meteorological agency also notes that several major roads, including the New York state Thruway, may be temporarily closed. “The weather during lake effect snow can range from dry conditions a few kilometers distant to bands of locally heavy snow with significantly limited visibility. Be ready for sudden changes in road conditions, visibility, and weather.
