NY weather update: Lake effect snow warning issued for Erie and Genesee counties until early Wednesday morning

At 3:56 a.m. on Tuesday, the National Weather Service issued an updated lake effect snow warning for Erie and Genesee counties, which would remain in force until Wednesday at 4 a.m.

“Heavy lake effect snow,” the weather service reports. There have been more snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches in most of Buffalo and the central eastern suburbs, and 9 to 18 inches in the South Buffalo Southtowns. Five to ten inches of accumulation are anticipated throughout Genesee County’s far southwest.

“With extremely poor visibility and heavy snow cover on the roadways, travel will be extremely challenging. The meteorological agency notes that some important roads may close for a while. “Think about postponing your trip. If you have to travel, drive very carefully. Give yourself more time to get to your destination and give yourself plenty of space between you and the car in front of you. Steer clear of abrupt acceleration or braking, and exercise extra caution when turning or going up slopes. Until the weather improves, you should remain inside. Wear layers if you must go outside. A bulky coat won’t keep you as warm as multiple layers of clothing. To lower the risk of hypothermia or frostbite, cover any exposed skin. Wearing a hat, scarf, and gloves will prevent you from losing body heat.

United Robots offers a service called Advance Local Weather Alerts that gathers the most recent information from the National Weather Service using machine learning.
