The National Weather Service issued an updated lake effect snow warning for Wyoming and Erie counties on Thursday at 4:04 a.m., which is in place until Friday at 4 a.m.
“Heavy lake effect snow,” the weather service reports. The most persistent lake snows accumulate an additional 4 to 8 inches of snow. Significant blowing and drifting snow is caused by winds that can reach 50 mph.
“The journey will be quite challenging. Visibility will be severely reduced in areas where snow is blowing, occasionally leading to near-whiteout conditions. Today’s morning and evening journeys will be impacted by the dangerous circumstances. According to the weather service, strong winds have the potential to blow down tree branches and result in isolated power outages. “Relatively narrow bands of heavy snow will fall. When traveling, be ready for quickly shifting visibility and road conditions. The weather during lake effect snow might range from dry conditions a few kilometers distant to bands of locally heavy snow with significantly impaired visibility. Be ready for sudden changes in road conditions, visibility, and weather.
