NY weather: Weather alert for dense fog in New York Monday evening

At 4:40 p.m. on Monday, the National Weather Service released a bulletin predicting dense fog in Niagara, Orleans, Erie, and Genesee counties through 6:30 p.m.

“Dense fog has spread over parts of the Niagara Frontier, particularly in Niagara Falls and near Lake Ontario. Through the early evening, this region of heavy fog may extend southward into Batavia and the Buffalo Metro area. The weather service advises drivers to expect a significant decrease in visibility due to the heavy fog.

Fog safety: Tips from the weather service for safe travels

The following safety precautions should be kept in mind if you must drive through fog:

Go at a moderate pace:

  • Slow down and allocate extra time for your trip to reach your destination safely.

Priority for visibility:

  • Ensure your vehicle is visible to others by using low-beam headlights, which also activate your taillights. If available, employ your fog lights.

Steer clear of high beams:

  • Refrain from using high-beam lights, as they create glare, making it more difficult for you to see what s ahead of you on the road.

Stay away:

  • Maintain a significant following distance to account for abrupt stops or shifts in traffic patterns.

Remain in your lane:

  • Use the road’s lane markings as a guide to remaining in the correct lane.

Strategy for zero visibility:

  • In cases of near-zero visibility due to dense fog, initiate your hazard lights and locate a secure spot, such as a nearby business parking area, to pull over and come to a halt.

Restricted parking possibilities

  • If no designated parking area is available, pull your vehicle as far off the road as possible. Once stationary, deactivate all lights except the hazard flashers, engage the emergency brake, and release the brake pedal to ensure your tail lights are not illuminated, reducing the risk of other drivers colliding with your stationary vehicle.
