NY weather: Weather alert issued for heavy snow in New York Wednesday afternoon

At 1:43 p.m. on Wednesday, the National Weather Service issued a weather alert for Montgomery, Schoharie, Schenectady, Saratoga, Albany, and Rensselaer counties, predicting heavy snowfall through 2:45 p.m.

“At 1:43 p.m., a band of heavy snow was along a line extending from Alplaus to Hartwick and moving east at 55 MPH,” according to the weather service.

Interstate 88 between exits 20 and 25; Interstate 90 between exits 10 and 26; Interstate 890 between exits 1a and 9; Interstate 87 between exits 21A and 7; and Interstate 787 between exits 1 and 9.

In the following areas, expect significant snowfall:


  • Schenectady, Clifton Park, Rotterdam, Cohoes, Scotia, Cobleskill, Niskayuna, Duanesburg, Schoharie, and Richmondville around 1:50 p.m.

  • Troy, Mechanicville, Waterford, and Altamont around 1:55 p.m.

  • Colonie and Green Island around 2 p.m.

  • Albany, Watervliet, Latham, Summit, and Center Brunswick around 2:05 p.m.

  • Hoosick Falls, Guilderland, and Middleburgh around 2:10 p.m.

  • Menands, Berne, Voorheesville, Grafton, and Loudonville around 2:15 p.m.

  • Wynantskill around 2:20 p.m.

  • Rensselaer and Wyantskill around 2:25 p.m.

In cold weather conditions, things might quickly get worse. Be ready for roads covered with ice or snow. Reduce your speed and give yourself more time to get there.
