The city parks department is seeking skilled swimmers to join their summer 2025 team as either beach or outdoor pool lifeguards, as the gloomy winter weather may have you craving a return to a day at the beach or a lengthy dip in the pool.
City lifeguards are paid $22 per hour and receive a $1,000 bonus in August. They work five to six days a week.
Candidates must complete a series of eyesight and swimming tests in addition to the Lifeguard Qualifying Test. Interested parties must fulfill the following criteria in order to be eligible:
be at least 16 years old when they begin working.
Without the use of corrective glasses, have at least 20/30 vision in one eye and 20/40 in the other. During the eye exam, glasses and contact lenses are not permitted.
possess the ability to swim 50 yards with proper form in 50 seconds or less.
From December to March, lifeguard qualifying exams are conducted in each of the five boroughs. The exams will take place on Staten Island at Curtis High School, located at 105 Hamilton Ave., St. George, on:
February 2nd, Sunday
March 10th, Monday
Lifeguard training starts after candidates pass the qualifying exam. Future lifeguards will learn life-saving skills, improve their swimming abilities, and obtain their certification to work as a lifeguard in New York City during this 40-hour program.
In late June, outdoor pools and park beaches in New York City open for business. The Sunday after Labor Day is when both close.
