NYC schools closed Thursday, Friday: What parents need to know ahead of the holiday weekend

Students in public and Catholic schools in New York City will have time off on Thursday and Friday, allowing them to enjoy an extended holiday weekend.

For the Thanksgiving holiday, students will have Thursday, November 28, through Friday, November 29, off from school. Schools will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, which falls on Thursday.

On Monday, December 2, students from Catholic and public schools will be back on campus.

There are about two dozen days off between the first and last day of courses in the city’s public school calendar, which is set by the Department of Education (DOE). The calendar provides time off for federal holidays, religious holidays, and week-long breaks for winter, mid-winter, and spring breaks.

With vacations for Christmas and Easter, among other holidays, Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of New York also offer plenty of time off for both Catholic and federal holidays throughout the academic year. In mid-June, the academic year usually concludes earlier than those of their counterparts in public schools.

There are still a lot of vacation days left before the year ends for those who are looking farther ahead.

Additionally, since Monday, December 23, will now be an extra day off, public school pupils will begin winter recess earlier this year.

Public schools in New York City will be off for winter break from Monday, December 23, to Wednesday, January 1. Friday, December 20, is the last day of courses before the break.

On Thursday, January 2, students will resume their classes.

This means that during this year’s winter recess, pupils will have 12 days off, including weekends.

Monday, December 23, marks the beginning of winter break for Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of New York as well, but their break is longer than that of public schools. On Monday, January 6, the following week, students will resume their classes.

That’s 16 days off total, including weekends.
