NYC Thanksgiving weather forecast: ‘A pretty good soaker’ is on its way

New York’s Staten Island. The most recent projections indicate that rain will be present throughout the festive holiday in the New York City area, so those who intend to attend the 2024 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday should bring some umbrellas.

Despite the fact that recent forecasts have been unsure about the precise time of the rain, there is increasing assurance that the region will be affected by the rainy weather just in time for family get-togethers.

According to Dave Dombek, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather, the parade will regrettably be rainy. With this Thanksgiving greeting, there is a little bit of both good and unpleasant news. It will not be a dry day, which is the bad news. People will need to have some rain gear if they plan to attend the procession in person.

On the plus side, Dombek says that since temperatures in the five boroughs will be much above freezing, there won’t be any chance of snow or ice anywhere close to the city. Dombek predicts that Thursday morning temperatures will hover around 43 degrees, with a steady increase as the morning wears on. Dombek predicts that the temperature will reach about 46 degrees by noon.

Dombek noted that anyone out and about would undoubtedly require some rain gear and would also likely need to wear layers. It will undoubtedly feel a little rough, cold, and damp outside.

Furthermore, according to Dombek, wind gusts are not anticipated to have a detrimental effect on the Thanksgiving Day Parade and its famous balloons.

Yes, a breeze will blow occasionally; it won’t be completely quiet, Dombek clarified. There will likely be a breeze, perhaps a northeastern one at 8 to 15 miles per hour, or occasionally 15 to 20 in some exposed places, but probably nothing more. Another piece of good news is that the winds won’t reach the point where balloon safety is an issue.

A timeline and rainfall amounts

Dombek makes it clear that there won’t be any annoying drizzle in the form of rainfall. Rather, this system is anticipated to be a rather strong soaker, with rain falling for a large portion of the day.

It will be a really rainy day, but it won’t be pouring a lot all day, Dombek added.

National Weather Service meteorologist Bryan Ramsey supports Dombek’s prediction and urges rainy weather over the region.

According to reports, the area will see an increase in rain showers starting late Wednesday night as a result of this low pressure system passing across the area around Thanksgiving. According to Ramsey, the precipitation will continue until it tapers off late Thursday night as the system moves off to the northeast.

Ramsey estimates that the region will receive between half an inch and three-quarters of an inch of precipitation. The senior meteorologist’s prediction, which ranges from a third of an inch to three-quarters of an inch of rain, is not far off.

I don’t think it will be very visible; it will likely just be like a constant rain throughout the day, Ramsey said. However, it is possible that you could witness moments of more moderate rainfall, especially closer to the center of low pressure.

Winter weather in upstate New York

There won’t be any wintry precipitation in New York City, but other regions of the state won’t be as lucky.

This system could bring several feet of lake effect snow to some areas of the state starting Wednesday night and continuing into the weekend. In preparation for the impending weather, Winter Storm Watches have been issued for parts of New York.

In reaction to this danger, Governor Kathy Hochul advises citizens to get ready for the snowstorm that is falling.

We are experiencing winter weather throughout the state, so as we gather this Thanksgiving, I encourage all New Yorkers to be vigilant, keep an eye on local predictions, and travel with caution to spend time with loved ones, Hochul said. We are getting ready to send more snow removal equipment and workers, utility crews, and the National Guard on standby because heavy lake effect snow will also affect some locations this weekend. To guarantee that we may all enjoy this holiday season with our loved ones in a warm and safe manner, please make advance plans and put your safety and the safety of others first if you are traveling.
