NYC weather: Is there a window for snow in early December?

New York’s Staten Island. Other regions of the state will experience several inches of snowfall heading into the weekend, despite the fact that Thanksgiving is looking to be a pretty nice soaking in New York City. Could the city experience snowfall as a wave of chilly air moves in our direction in the next several days?

It wasn’t until January 16 of last year that the five boroughs saw any discernible snowfall. The apparently interminable snowless streak that had plagued New York City for almost 700 days came to an end, despite the fact that the cold precipitation barely amounted to approximately an inch.

Although snow is expected to arrive much earlier this year, meteorologists warn that the forecast’s lack of precipitation could just allow this window to pass.

Period where NYC could see snow

Following the Thanksgiving storm, some winter temperatures will be arriving in the region, according to Dave Dombek, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather, who spoke with the Advance/SILive.com.

According to Dombek, it appears that New York City will experience chilly temperatures by the end of the week, particularly this weekend and into what will likely be the first half of next week, if not the most of it. However, it also appears to be largely dry, so that’s sort of the odd configuration we’re dealing with here.

AccuWeather predicts that daily lows will be in the mid 20s and low 30s, while daily highs will only be in the high 30s and low 40s starting on Saturday and lasting through the first week of December.

Although the likelihood of precipitation is only 55%, AccuWeather predicts that there may be some snow in the city as early as Wednesday morning, December 4.

“It looks dry, but we’ll have plenty of cold weather next week. If we had a storm, we probably would have snow next week,” Dombek continued.

Bryan Ramsey, a National Weather Service meteorologist, pointed out that this cold pattern may last long into December and that if a system moves in, snowflakes would undoubtedly be present, even though this window might pass without any snow reaching New York City.

According to Ramsey, there is a chance that we might maintain a somewhat chilly trend throughout December.

The National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center assigns December equal odds of seeing either warmer or cooler-than-normal temperatures. It’s possible that the city will have a White Christmas if we have a month with normal freezing temperatures.
