NYC weather: When to expect rain, snow showers, heavy winds from clipper storm

New York’s Staten Island. With the arrival of the Alberta clipper storm to the north, the most recent forecast for New York City suggests that locals may encounter anything from strong gusts to snow showers.

The rain showers, which are predicted to arrive in the region as early as 6 p.m. on Wednesday, will be the first meteorological condition to become noticeable, according to National meteorological Service meteorologist John Murray. However, as the evening wears on, the probability of that precipitation rises; Murray stated that by approximately 9 p.m., there is confidence in rainfall.

“There’s a chance that there might be some snowflakes mixed in tonight at the beginning, but it will mostly be rain tonight and tomorrow,” Murray added.

From tonight through Thursday evening, a low pressure system is expected to bring rain, snow, and severe winds to the region. An inch or two of snow may fall in some areas of the interior, and wind gusts of up to 50 mph are predicted.#CTwx#NJwxpic.twitter.com/1QHbyla2Eg #NYCwx#NYwx

There may be lulls in the rains during the night, and by Thursday at 8 a.m., the likelihood of precipitation is down to 35%. The likelihood of rain or snow drops even more after 10 a.m., with only a 15–20% possibility beyond that time.

Conflicting forecasts for a snow squall

It’s interesting to note that there is disagreement over whether a snowstorm will hit New York City during the morning rush hour. According to Murray, the weather service is not predicting these kinds of conditions.

However, AccuWeathers warned that a snow squall might hit the five boroughs, reducing visibility and making driving difficult on Thursday morning’s commute.

Travel problems could result from the significant reduction in visibility, according to Bob Larson, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather. There are a few innocuous raindrops falling while you drive, but all of a sudden, it turns into snow and falls heavily in a quick burst that is difficult to see or anything. That might be a problem, but it will be resolved quickly.

According to Larson, this brief storm is not anticipated to be broad and would resemble a brief summer thunderstorm in that it might have significant effects in some parts of the city while having little to no effect in others.

Murray is skeptical of a snow squall, but he thinks the city might see a few isolated snow showers on the tail end of the clipper storm that come in behind the cold front.

According to Murray, there won’t be any detectable snowfall in the New York City region since the temperatures are too warm for any accumulation.

The threat of heavy winds

AccuWeather and the weather service both predict that strong winds will threaten the city on Thursday.

According to Murray, winds are expected to pick up speed after 8 a.m. on Thursday, with the strongest sustained winds occurring around 4 or 5 p.m. Thursday is expected to see winds of 20 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 50 mph.

The weather service has issued a wind alert for New York City in preparation for severe winds. On Thursday, this advisory will be in force from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Murray continued, “We won’t start to see a more dramatic decrease in those winds until the late evening hours.”
